During the grafting exercise, I became aware of my recurring way of using the past or human experience. The use of contemporary dance technique is important for me to create movement and evoke feeling. As a dance maker, the message is very important. I use for example abstract storytelling.
Below you will find different aspects of my research. I explored my positioning as a black performer, affected to societal issues and within the context of the Dutch performing arts.
Naomi Schouten is a Dutch dancer. She graduated from the pre-education of ArtEZ (2012-2019), where her passion and love for dancing grew. She danced the repertoire of Robert Battle, in collaboration with Introdans, under the direction of Marlena Wolfe. She has also collaborated with Keren Levi, Caroline Finn, Jens van Daele, Maciej Kuźmiński, Wubkje Kuidersma and Neel Verdoorn. In addition, she danced in Roots Youth Folk Company (2015), and toured with them, which added to her performance experience. Currently, her interest lies in the depth of the intention behind movements. In the ArtEZ Bachelor of Dance program she is now experimenting with making various pieces such as “Fly like a bird” and “Ain't I A Woman?”.
